International Ferris Wheel Day
Not only is 14th February Valentines Day its also International Ferris Wheel Day. From the London Eye to fairground rides, ferris and observation wheels are a favourite attraction.
The original Ferris wheel was designed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. The challenge was create a showpiece for the 1983 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago to rival the Eiffel Tower and the wheel was the winning design. The original wheel measured 250 feet in diameter, had 36 cars which could each carry 60 people, it was dismantled in 1894 and made a final appearance in St Louis at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition before sadly being blown up with dynamite in a controlled demolition in 1906.
