International Roller Coaster Day
Celebrate International Roller Coaster Day on 16th August with a trip to your favourite theme park.
Roller coasters have been around for 200 years but not quite as we know them today. One of the earliest roller coasters was the “Aerial Strolls” in Paris which featured wheeled cars locked to a track with rails to keep them on course. The first roller coaster in Europe was the “Switchback Railway” that opened at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 1891 with the “Big Dipper” opening in 1923.
Roller coasters are still one of the most popular rides in theme parks, bigger and faster than ever. The fastest roller coaster in the world today is Formula Rosa in Abu Dhabi with a top speed of 240km per hour.
